Derry Girls: cinque adolescenti nell'Irlanda del Nord degli anni '90

Una divertente commedia costruita su di un contesto amaro che ogni tanto prende il sopravvento.

"Derry Girls" è una serie televisiva ambientata negli anni '90 in Irlanda del Nord, una commedia su di un gruppo di teenager in un momento e un posto difficile in cui vivere.

I protagonisti sono Erin, sua cugina Orla, le loro amiche Clare, Michelle e suo cugino James, tutti e cinque studenti di una scuola cattolica secondaria femminile (sì, anche James). La loro adolescenza, un periodo difficile per tutti, subisce ulteriori complicazioni a causa degli scontri indipendentisti nella loro città, Derry. I cinque personaggi principali cercano di vivere la loro gioventù come gli adolescenti nel resto d'Europa, ma a volte gli eventi di cronaca interferiscono nella loro quotidianità. Il tenore della serie è quasi sempre quello della commedia, costruita però su di un contesto amaro che ogni tanto prende il sopravvento. I personaggi sono tutti ben caratterizzati e interpretati, e oltre alla cinquina di protagonisti si distingue Suor George Michael (Siobhán McSweeney), preside dell'istituto, vera rivelazione della fiction. "Derry Girls" è stata la serie più seguita di sempre in Irlanda del Nord, ma purtroppo ne sono state realizzate solo tre stagioni, in quanto secondo l'autrice Lisa McGee i personaggi andavano portati fino alla fine della scuola superiore ma non oltre.

Sull'aggregatore di recensioni Rotten Tomatoes la prima stagione ha un'incredibile percentuale di approvazione del 100%, e il giudizio del sito dichiara che "un cast perfettamente curato e una scrittura cruda guidano l'umorismo nero di Derry Girls mentre la creatrice Lisa McGee fa una frenetica luce sulla vita da teenager nell'Irlanda del Nord degli anni '90". La seconda stagione ha ottenuto un indice di approvazione di pochissimo inferiore, il 97%, con il commento: "Derry Girls non perde affatto il suo fascino irriverente grazie ai suoi balzi prevedibilmente imprevedibili e alle caratterizzazioni astute". Anche la terza stagione raggiunge il 100% di approvazione con il consenso "Separarsi è un dolore così dolce, ma l'ultima stagione di Derry Girls promette di raccogliere quante più risate possibile prima che gli spettatori dicano un affettuoso addio a questa adorabile banda di miscredenti." La serie è visibile sulla piattaforma Netflix.

Colonna sonora

La musica caratterizza molto gli episodi di "Derry Girls", in particolar modo quello in cui i protagonisti vanno ad un concerto dei Take That. La canzone principale della serie, intitolata "Dreams", è stata composta da Dolores O'Riordan e Noel Hogan. La soundtrack comprende moltissimi brani che andavano di moda negli anni '90, soprattutto di musicisti irlandesi e britannici, con ovviamente tante canzoni dei Cranberries ma non solo. Farete un incredibile viaggio nel passato ascoltando "Love Is All Around" dei Wet Wet Wet, "Gonna Make You Sweat" dei C+C Music Factory, "Losing My Religion" dei R.E.M., "What Can I Do" dei Corrs, "All That She Wants" degli Ace of Base, "I'm Too Sexy" dei Right Said Fred, "Girls and Boys" dei Blur, "Everything Changes" dei Take That, "Wannabe" delle Spice Girls e molti altri brani iconici del periodo. Nella colonna sonora, curiosamente, non è compresa nemmeno una canzone degli U2.
